I will get around to reprinting this little book of two stories later this year (only made about 30 copies on the first run because they were kinda expensive to print). While waiting here is the story I like more of the two.

It is a story about a gently depressed bartender who makes a wish and then thinks about it (instead of the other way around as is generally recommended)

Dear Wonderful World... )

Let me know if you'd like a copy when I get.. around.. to it. Happy Monday

After months of putting it off here it is at last: post-con sales post for the ~50 copies of Drops in the Ocean I had reprinted recently. I'm sorry it took so long to get this up! Here is some information about the book.
  • It is a rather ambiguous* story about a wish made in an aquarium, and how it was granted (or not?), and features a grumpy talking rabbit
  • It is 28 pages long (22 pages of actual story, of which 8 are in colour and the rest greyscale)
  • The colour pages are not as bright as in the previews (after CMYK conversion)
  • It is 7" x 10", quite flat, with laminated covers, the paper used for the pages is kind of thin (Sorry to be anal, I felt I should mention all this because this is not CF and you can't flip through it before buying)

Page previews )

The book is US$7 (I am going to pack it in a bubble envelope) and shipping via registered mail (2-3 weeks, with parcel tracking) is roughly $6 for the US/Canada, $5 for Europe and $4 for Australia/Asia. Afraid I can only accept Paypal at the moment or money transfer to a Malaysian bank account.. Btw if you are in Malaysia forget the above, it is RM15, though you'll have to let me know if you'd prefer registered mail, Poslaju or pickup (the last is FOC but you will have to encounter my stupid cat face)

To order please email hwei (dot) lim (at) gmail with:
  • 'Drops order' in the subject line
  • Your paypal email (to help keep track)
  • Your physical mailing address (and your name to go on the envelope)
I will reply to your email to let you know how to settle it from there.

Thanks so much and sincere apologies to everyone who kept asking patiently after this book over the past four months. If you do place an order, thanks so much for your support and kindness! I kept a list of everyone who asked about it so if you did at some point and only come to this post after a few days no worries as I have reserved you a copy in case you are still interested (it is okay if you are not, I'll update the list as time goes by)

Cheers
hwei

*This is a moot point, all my stories are somewhat ambiguous

a surprisingly action-packed last few weeks )

So. I'm back in the tropics now and it is 8 days to Comic Fiesta and counting! My books will be ready next Friday night!! The printing company is full of angels!!! I will be sharing a booth with KC and Amei and Wrats!!!!! hopefully I will not pass out from excitement and not too many people will be scared away and I will get to meet new friends!!!!!! And I should go easy on the exclamation marks, and look up what number our booth is. Yes. I will make a proper information post after work. I came back to SO MUCH WORK it's not funny

The Basara story is still wip 6/12 :D; I will probably just print it myself last minute as a mini-comic or.. put it online... Also while I managed to explain the ocean book to the printing company with lots of vague handwaving, I do not know how to even begin explaining the concept of Basara, let alone "modern-day sengokujidai AU in which Ishida Mitsunari is an angry schoolgirl"

on that note here is a basara fanart dump from the past few months. sorry tumblr folks who have seen all of this already )

Ok back to work. It is my first week back and I am already feeling like someone who defuses bombs for a living. A KANCHEONG SPIDER

1) Actually this was a good strategy; the avalanche of guilt I got off this splurge prevented me from spending any more money for the rest of the trip

2) So surreally WKW-ish it is deserving of its own post, although the fact that I immediately thought to write about it as a story right after it went down is very illustrative of how "people who write about their friends may end up with no friends"

Y's mates visited last weekend. This resulted in an eating tour in the general vicinity of KL, following which I decided to document a template of said tour for future guests. This assumes arrival on Friday evening and departure late Sunday afternoon.

FRIDAY NIGHT
* 8PM: Garlic/cheese naan & best tandoori chicken (roadside stall opposite Ampang Point)
* OR the above + curries, masala, satay, Heartstopper(1) if late enough (Naan Corner, Ampang)
* 10PM: Wine & siew yoke (Vintry, Kota Damansara)
* 2AM: Indomie burger (Darussalam mamak, Sri Hartamas)

SATURDAY
* 11AM: Eggs/toast, belacan fried rice, hainanese chicken chop, roti babi, roast pork, coffee, butter cake (Yut Kee, Jalan Dang Wangi)
* 4PM: Pasembur & cendol (Jalan Ampang/MRR intersection)
* 8PM: Salted egg / chili crab and other Chinese stirfries (Mei Keng Fatt)
* 10PM: Booze (Brussels Beer House)

SUNDAY
* 10AM: Nasi lemak (Kampung Baru)
* OR roti canai (Risda Corner, Jalan Ampang)
* Or both
* 3PM: Nasi ganja(2) (Kudus, Jalan Tunku Ab Rahman)

1) Share this with a friend. It is a regular sized Ramli burger with two heart attacks worth of grease jus and sos
2) Well no it's nasi kandar actually. But he puts three types of curries on your rice by default so tis so good you might as well be eating ganja

The only thing you might have to line up for is Yut Kee so try to time that right (11AM is just my guess at that lull between breakfast and lunch crowds). The other places are not so bad on weekends. I will make a map soonish since getting anywhere in KL is more murder than fun.

CF kakis / partners in crime: We might not have time for everything that weekend but I will tweak this to accomodate schedule / eating on weekdays! Also since CF is in Berjaya other places might make more sense like pork noodle and that notorious tai chow off Imbi. Also also there are other things that are kind of far away that I haven't found a decent KL-ish place for like dry bak kut teh, char kuey teow, dim sum, you tiao..

Now you all know why I never update this thing, we're always GONE EATING

I had a day off which I intended to spend watching The Tatami Galaxy (四畳半神話大系) (as subbed by Funimation / animecrazy if you live outside of the US). I've only gone through two eps and they were delightfully weird and entertaining. Not sure how long the repeating plot device can sustain itself, but I thought the animation style was pretty unusual and very cute. Also I really like Akashi AND I LOVE OZU ALTHOUGH HE DOES INDEED LOOK LIKE A YOUKAI

*

But my plan was foiled because the night before I had a sad dream about Mitsunari so obviously most of my day off was blown drawing a comic about an SB3 stage, and taking liberties with Gyoubu. Like the Misogi film club president says, "why do you keep making these ridiculous things no one else understands? it's disgustingly masturbatory"

Not so long time ago in a community not that far away a couple of MIND BLOWING drabbles were written based on a magnificent idea regarding the hypothetical romance of two anthropomorphized MMOs. (I can only imagine their meeting: of how they did look each other up and down, and L2 did disapprove, and WoW did say 'hi baby').

And my mind was indeed blown, and buoyed by the wind under the wings of this unholy love, and an extended saga of BOTH great hilarity and powerful emotional metaphors, I may have drawn some stuff. FOR WHICH I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE

Except for the stupid pun about parties )

So there. The brilliance and the blame lie not with me ಠ_ಠ

PS. Finished Kavalier and Clay, or, I spent uncountable hours floating in A SEA OF BEAUTIFUL WORDS, also aughh escapism, loss, illusion, COMIC BOOKS, I have been stunned into forgetting how to express myself
tongari: Tony Leung and Tony Leung - Eagle Shooting Heroes (steps out of the shade)
I took so long to type up this post that the Sengoku Basara: Samurai Heroes demo (English version of BSR3) is suddenly available on PSN! I couldn't not mention it now. It is a fun hack n' slash game with many delightful characters only very loosely based on real history, although you may feel like slapping some of them by the end of a story route. Please try it out!

That is all that was important, the rest of this post is just me being a nerd. To celebrate have some fanarts.

cue long ramble about oichi )

moving on to the guys, incl spoilers for aniki`s green route. Basically: ▲▽▼ )

Tomorrow is Hari Raya; a happy Eid to all who celebrate! In the spirit of forgiving and being forgiven, please forgive me all the stupidities I have perpetrated, and please be patient as I try to avoid making more. Happy holidays to the rest of everyone.

Hegemons always resent heaven, because only hell awaits us at the end of our path. - Guo Jia to Cao Cao

The Ravages of Time ((火鳳燎原) or as I like to call it, THREE KINGDOMS OF BADASS, is a Hong Kong comic based on the Romance of Three Kingdoms. It is full of (hundreds of) characters (spanning multiple, sprawling storylines) who can beat up entire armies, sometimes armed only with a hoe; pull spears out of their own bodies and wield them saying "thanks for the weapons", throw horses across the battlefield, eat their own eyes, crossdress super convincingly, etc.. Yet for all these oddities, Ravages remains IMHO the most complex, clever, engaging and unbelievably human Three Kingdoms interpretation you can find today.

Most importantly it has the best portrayal of Guo Jia ever. Cut for spoilers up to 318 and scary fanart )

PS. I had this post typed up last week, but before I posted it a lot of very kind and well-meaning people crashed my webhost (in the best of all possible ways; thank you for your many kind words), placing me in a state of shock, disbelief, and extreme mortification. I wanted to hide under my bed all day, except there was a lot of stuff under it already so I couldn't. But so far all seems good! No one has emailed me angrily to complain, also more pressingly I have not had to explain Sengoku Basara and/or ojisans to any RL friends whom I know follow Mr Gaiman's twitter. The feeling of relief is pretty intense. Although I will work hard to draw some proper Sandman fanart by way of apology

PPS. Speaking of Sengoku Basara, "Ishida Mitsunari" is a front page pixiv tag! I invite everyone to celebrate by mentally picturing our beloved ▽-kun as a belligerent kemonomimi with fox ears and huge fluffy tail. In fact why isn't this his alt costume.

PPPS. Okay I am a huge nerd I found the meaning of Mitsunari's crest and am sobbing. DOES HE NOT UNDERSTAND THIS IN BASARA OR SOMETHING
tongari: Tony Leung and Tony Leung - Eagle Shooting Heroes (Default)
Actually I am 100% sure someone else has not only done a Sandman/Inception crossover but dunnit far more eloquently (I got tired after page 4, re-read it and said WAIT WHAT IS THIS EVEN ABOUT)

inception/sandman: cities of sand. cut for spoilers for Inception (well.. everything) and Sandman books 9 and 10 (although you have no excuse for not reading them) )

I remember being twenty-two once. I remember hating myself and wishing I would die. I had just finished my final exams, was quite convinced I had failed one paper particularly miserably, was certain I would not get a job in my favorite city in all the world.. That I would never have a more meaningful relationship than the one I'd just lost, would never be attractive and glamorous and talented and live in an exciting bustling city like a 'real person' - I would just go home and continue to struggle with the same frustration and feelings of loserliness I've been struggling with since I was little. I remember wanting a very specific future for myself, being very upset that I couldn't have it, and preferring to have no future at all.

Today I am twenty-seven and I am living the future I didn't want when I was twenty-two. These days, just before I go to sleep, or while stewing in rush hour traffic, I still struggle with bouts of frustration and loserliness. Today though it is more like a childish tantrum; you get all riled up and then it's over and you're suddenly, awkwardly embarrassed. The truth is I am glad my wish did not come true and I did not die when I was twenty-two. Otherwise I would not be twenty-seven today, writing emails like I know what I am talking about, entrusted with errands for various people, trying to draw beautiful things and having Guinness drinking competitions with the mangz. I am still not much more glamorous or talented than I was at twenty-two. But I am a bit more hard working and practical and in the past five years have met a lot of wonderful people and have seen some amazing places and worked at things that have taught me so much. Also today I have a few pairs of really nice shoes (look every little bit helps okay)

Of course there are a lot of things that I wish hadn't happened, that I'd handled with more grace, more kindness, especially involving other people. My deepest regrets about the past five years have been my own mistakes; very few of them have been due to 'being a failure' to my demanding younger self, i.e. being a non-glamorous person slaving at a boring job in a developing and inefficient country. Mostly I think about how much I have hurt other people - through selfishness or carelessness or poor execution of good intentions - and then instead of dying I wish I could be twenty-two, twenty-three, even twenty-six and three hundred fifty five days all over again. I think I could handle these things more gracefully a second time around having learnt what I know today. I want to handle these things more gracefully a second time around. But you don't get to be twenty-two or twenty-six or even twenty-seven again. You do, however, get to be thirty-two. So when I feel like I want to die these days, I think about how much I have gained and been forgiven and learned in the past five years. Then I feel a lot more optimistic about the next five years.

I wish the person who needed to hear these words the most was still around to hear them. I'm not sure if simply hearing the words would have helped. The worst thing now is to never know whether anything could have helped. To remain forever twenty-two and never give life and other people the chance to offer you anything better beyond what you can imagine for yourself.

That's what I wish I could have said to her, what I'd say to you.

there are a hundred Mr Children songs for the person you want to spend the rest of your life with. amongst these battalions I dunno why "Kuchibue" hits me particularly hard. this song (and the translated lyrics) has always made me want to cry and then go off and draw a couple idling or bullying each other or mucking about in lush green fields somewhere.. IDK why Vesperia suddenly seems like a good fit, we just swashbuckled our way onto the ocean so maybe I am missing my rolling green fields on the map

also I spoiled myself by watching a certain boss fight on youtube it was pretty gar.

I've been playing FF4 and Layton to prevent myself from buying the FF13 special edition PS3 which is BEAUTIFUL but only comes with the Japanese version of the game. Eliminating the need to find save points = BEST FEATURE EVER

I have been waking up with a splitting headache every morning since new year's though.. probably due to squinting at the tiny tiny screen. Layton is super cute but I must confess I am just grinding my way through FF4 (LOSING THE BEST MEMBERS OF MY PARTY AT EACH STAGE) waiting for Cecil to transform into fruity blue lipstick version ala emlan's DFF fanart. honestly are Yoshitaka Amano and the creator of Jojo BFFs or what

SO how have you been spending your new year's??

three day weekend!! i have no art to post aside from tshirt designs and no photos to share since idek and i have to go soon so instead here are some awesome old short stories by Robert Sheckley. I saved them on my HDD and read them while internetless and scared out of my mind in a mysterious and creepy hotel room (two hours later I finally went over to check what the funny noises from the window were, it was an angry beetle stuck in the curtains):

* Cordle to Onion to Carrot: a meek and gentle soul learns the joy of being an asshole

* Protection: when accepting guardian angels, demand fine print

* Bad Medicine: in the future machines will cure everything. the trick is to pick the right machine

there are more, I didn't really like Prize of Peril but I thought it was an amazingly brilliant premonition of 21st century virtual reality TV
